Traveling for work is the perfect way to experience exciting new adventures while getting paid. However, unless you use your imagination, working away from one’s own city can be limited to the views from inside sterile hotel rooms and generic conference centers. Here are some tips and tricks for turning work travels into unforgettable occasions.

Carve Out Some Personal Time

A disadvantage of traveling for work is that the travel can be focused only on work. Regardless of how tight one’s schedule is, the traveler should always carve at least some portion of personal time out of his or her schedule to experience the local amenities. Make it a point to get out and about!

When in Rome

Every city has its own special characteristics. Before embarking upon a business trip, it is a good idea to read up on your destination to determine its most distinguishing characteristics. If a city is famous for its home style baked goods, be sure to stop in to grab a cupcake before you leave for the airport. If a city is renowned for a particular feature, such as a lake, river or eclectic section of town, be sure to visit those places, if only long enough to snap a photo. You will not regret it.

Steer Clear of Tourist Traps

Tourist areas are fraught with crowds and overpriced merchandise. When traveling to a new city, try to frequent the areas just on the outskirts of the high-traffic tourist areas. Prices tend to be lower, and the experience without throngs of people will be infinitely better.

Take a Walk

Business trips usually allow travelers an hour or more for lunch. Rather than sitting in an office to eat a stale catered sandwich, take a brief walk to a local eatery. There is no better way to capture the essence of a city than through its local food. Walking also provides an up close, personal perspective that cannot be experienced by car travel.

Socialize

There is no better way to gain a fresh perspective about a location than by striking up a conversation with a local. Ask about nearby places of interest, good places to eat and sites that should not be missed. By following these tips, the business traveler can transform his or her experience into an unforgettable trip of a lifetime.
