Have you ever attended an event and been struck by what you could have experienced, but didn’t? Have you ever had a sudden inspiration but were unable to apply the inspiration to your event’s design? When it comes to the creative process, it is easy for us to get ahead of ourselves. That’s why it’s important to answer some basic questions before letting our creative juices flow! Here are 11 questions you need to answer before creating an event design:

The Four Basics: What Who Where & How

  • What is the event?
  • Who is it for?
  • Where will it be?
  • How many will attend?

These four basic questions set up your initial planning parameters. They let you know what direction to head in when creating your overall theme or message, what audience you are catering for, the size of the event, and what sort of space you will need to put to use.

Budget, Resources, Deadlines & Needs:

  • What’s your budget?
  • What resources do you have?
  • What are your deadlines?
  • What do you still need?

The answers to these questions resolve any logistical restraints. Will the event ideas you’re forming work within your budget? What resources, people, or organizations are at your disposal? When do you need to meet certain deadlines and will this curtail how elaborate your ideas will become? What resources, materials, or people do you still need to locate?

The Three Will’s:

  • Will there be musical entertainment?
  • Will it work into your concept or theme?
  • Will this reflect the cohesiveness of the event?

These last three questions help determine the final direction your creativity will take. If there is music, does the style alter or enhance the event? Does it change your initial ideas of concept or theme? Will it add or take away from the overall cohesiveness of the experience? If it does take away, how will you alter the event design to incorporate this new element?

As you’ve probably discovered, by answering these 11 questions you’ve already started creating your new event design. But rather than making your event fit the creation, your creation fits the event! Whether a small soirée in your neighbor’s backyard, or a multi-company gathering at a convention center, these 11 questions and their answers will help stave off any pitfalls when creating an event design! elm Planning would love to help with your next event, contact us today!
